Intersection Design for Transit

Third Street, SAN FRANCISCO, CA
Dustin White

Making intersections efficient for transit operation and safe for people both inside and outside transit vehicles requires that a variety of design elements work well together: stop location and type, management of mixed-traffic turns, and bikeway location and design.

Geometry guides street users through intersections, working in tandem with signals to sort out conflicts and establish priority among users. The complexity, size, and intensity of use of intersections can create challenges for both transit reliability and pedestrian comfort and safety. Intersections can be organized by designating turn and through lanes, setting clear vehicle and walking paths through the intersection, and providing transit vehicles with a way to avoid general traffic queues and make use of signal priority treatments.
