Mike Flynn is Director of Active Transportation at Sam Schwartz Engineering (SSE), where he leads the firm’s Active Transportation practice and serves as project manager and technical advisor on a range of projects spanning design, planning, policy, strategy and research. His approach bridges disciplines, reflecting the holistic nature of urban transportation today, and leverages his public-sector experience to see ideas through to implementation. Prior to joining SSE, Mike served for ten years at the New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) in several roles, most recently as Director of Capital Planning & Project Initiation. His award-winning work at NYCDOT included implementation of precedent-setting pedestrian plaza and bike lane projects, the development of the City’s first street design guidelines, major advances in how the agency measures and reports on its performance, creation of a Green Infrastructure office, and obtaining millions of dollars in new funding. Mike received a Master of Science degree in City and Regional Planning from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, where he currently serves on the faculty.
