NACTO Trainings and Workshops

Design Guide Trainings

The NACTO Certified Training Program brings together leaders in street design for intensive hands-on trainings and workshops based on messaging and content from NACTO’s Design Guides. These in-depth events are an opportunity for city staff to learn about principles from the Design Guides then apply these principles in real-world site design exercises.

The range of topics covered by the Urban Bikeway Design Guide, Urban Street Design Guide, and Transit Street Design Guide allows for trainings to be targeted to meet a city’s specific needs. One-day trainings with a morning seminar and afternoon design charrette are typical, and many cities take advantage of the presence of nationally recognized design leaders to hold additional events for policymakers, civic leaders, and the public.

Trainings are available throughout North America, including cities outside NACTO’s member network. NACTO’s Certified Trainers lead most workshops outside the network, and bring with them a broad and practice-informed perspective on the transportation design and planning issues facing North American cities.

Workshops are available primarily to NACTO members. They combine the targeted explanation of design principles and treatments from trainings with increased opportunities for hands-on exercises, dialogues, and charrettes, where participants apply training concepts to real-world scenarios.

NACTO members should contact us directly to arrange workshops and other events. In member cities, NACTO staff organize and lead trainings alongside our Certified Trainers and the unparalleled leadership of the NACTO network of city practitioners.

Sister Cities Roadshows

NACTO Member cities are working together to expand best bikeway design practices across the country. Sister Cities Roadshows offer an opportunity for Affiliate Member cities to come together with other nearby mid- and small-sized cities. Both city staff and advocates are invited to participate in the two-day Roadshows.

A typical Sister City event is a 2-day event including short peer city presentations, a NACTO Urban Bikeway Design Training, an infrastructure tour in the host city, a group design charrette, sponsor product demos, and evening social event. Five to seven peer cities, 3–5 sponsoring vendors, a local bicycling advocate organization, and NACTO staff typically participate. Many city staff use this opportunity to connect with their counterparts from peer cities while learning about NACTO member benefits, the latest bikeway design guidance, and innovative products offered by sponsors.

For more information about sponsorship, or if your city is interested in hosting a Roadshow, please contact [email protected].
