Where’s the Problem? Using Web-based Dashboard to Visualize Bus Speed and Reliability Data

Buses are the backbone of many urban transit systems—where transit agencies invest the most service hours, have the most flexibility in their systems, but are most susceptible to the constraints and congestion on urban surface streets. Typically, bus performance is laboriously analyzed on a route-by-route basis, but TriMet wanted both a broader and finer-grained understanding of where buses were delayed across the metro region. In building a program and partnerships to address bus speed and reliability, they needed a deep understanding of their own data—to daylight problem areas; diagnose the performance issues; make defensible and durable decisions; and drive to implementable, near-term solutions. Nelson\Nygaard developed a web-based dashboardthat brings together AVL/APC data with a representation of TriMet’s bus network at the street segment level. The dashboard provides user-friendly tools for visualizing bus performance at micro and macro levels, considering not just what is happening in the core of the transit system, but how what happens in the core affects the periphery. This session will discuss the process of developing the innovative transit network representation and demonstrate the capabilities and insights of the dashboard tool.
