Walkshop: The Emerald Necklace

The Emerald Necklace is a seven-mile linear park system designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, a landscape architect, journalist, abolitionist and sanitary commissioner whose writings helped inspire the creation of the National Park System.

In this tour, we’ll take a bus to our starting point at one of the gems of this system, Franklin Park. From there, we’ll ride bikes along the Arborway to the Arnold Arboretum, Jamaica Pond, the Muddy River Restoration Project, and Justine Mee Liff Park, which was formerly a parking lot before being restored to parkland. We’ll then take the Fenway by the Museum of Fine Arts to Boylston Street, and return to the Hynes Convention Center.

Along the way, we’ll discuss how the parks are used today. What work is being done by the City and local groups to make them more inclusive? How do these parks help with climate resilience? To what extent was Olmsted’s vision achieved, and how does that vision hold up today?
