Walkshop: People Before Highways: Southwest Corridor

Walkshop: People Before Highways: Southwest Corridor

Learn about the rich history of Boston’s transportation and housing activism. We’ll tour the precedent-setting Orange line corridor, and hear from one of the nation’s top scholars of the “people before highways” movement, Dr. Karilyn Crockett. We’ll discuss the history of the Southwest Corridor, as well as the activism that allowed nearby communities to successfully mobilize against a massive interchange.

Then, we’ll stop by Back Bay to learn about the Pullman Porters, visit Tent City to talk about housing activism and walk along the Southwest Corridor to see the lasting impact of the pioneering Boston and Cambridge activists who, in the 1960s, fought the interstates and won.
