How to Build a Thriving, Equitable Bike Share System

Aug 03, 2016

How do we make bike share more successful, and help it reach the communities that could most benefit from the access, mobility, and opportunities that bike share brings?

Last month, the Better Bike Share Partnership, a collaboration of partners including NACTO, hosted the Better Bike Share Conference in Philadelphia, where over 100 city officials, bike share operators, and experts in equity and community organizing came together to hop on bikes and get to work on making bike share work for everyone.

There are six essential ingredients for a bike share system to be equitable and successful:

  1. Convenience, scale and density
  2. Safe places to ride
  3. Engagement and outreach
  4. Connections to transit
  5. Jobs & opportunities
  6. Smart pricing

We collaborated with Streetfilms to document last month’s conference, with interviews from those at the forefront of looking at equity in transportation. The short film is a look at the tremendous progress that cities and advocates have made in using bike share to expand opportunities for everyone, helping people get around, connect to their communities, and get access to fulfilling jobs. Take a few minutes, watch the video, and see how you can continue to build on this momentum.
