The Transportation Justice Fellowship

Transportation justice aims to provide all communities with access to safe, reliable, affordable, and equitable transportation, connecting people to the places, resources, and opportunities they need to thrive.

The Better Bike Share Partnership created the Transportation Justice Fellowship to support US-based early- and mid-career professionals of color with 1-8 years of experience in the field, who are working to embed mobility justice in transportation agency priorities and beyond. The Fellowship amplifies the voices of people of color working in the transportation sector, providing professional development and networking opportunities.

The 2023-2024 Fellowship will focus on Shared Micromobility (SMM) as a critical tool for operationalizing equity and transportation justice. The Fellowship runs from November 2023 through June 2024.

The Fellowship is a unique opportunity for professionals interested in:

  • Focusing on shared micromobility (SMM) as a tool for building equitable transportation systems
  • Building relationships among peers working in transportation and mobility justice
  • Enhancing skills that strengthen the ability to advance justice in agencies or organizations
  • Building skills and tools required to thrive in the transportation field
  • Identifying new opportunities for your individual and organizational growth
  • Developing a project of personal interest that can be presented at NACTO’s Designing Cities Conference in May 2024 (Conference travel and accommodations are included as part of the Fellowship.)

The Fellowship includes 50 hours of programming for eight Fellows, who will receive training from an experienced consultant team, visits from experts in the transportation sector, and one-on-one coaching sessions from specialists.

From tools for professional growth to insights on promoting equity in the transportation sector, the Transportation Justice Fellowship offers a talented group of change agents the opportunity to learn together and work at the forefront of transportation justice.

The Better Bike Share Partnership (BBSP) is a collaboration between NACTO, the City of Philadelphia, and the PeopleForBikes Foundation. With support from the JPB Foundation, BBSP works to increase access to and use of shared micromobility systems in low-income and communities of color. Since its founding, BBSP has diligently developed programs and communications strategies to increase equity in shared micromobility, highlight best practices, and elevate the voices of those who have been traditionally underrepresented in transportation decision-making.
