Until very recently, Vaughn Bell brought art into the public realm as the staff artist at the Seattle Department of Transportation. She worked within SDOT for over four years, incorporating a variety of art and enhancement projects in the right-of-way as an art planner and designer. In this unique position, Vaughn worked alongside engineers, project managers and transportation planners to think holistically about public spaces and infrastructure improvement projects, with an eye towards creating more delightful and human-oriented places. Vaughn currently creates public artworks, interactive projects and immersive environments that reflect on the paradoxes and possibilities of people’s relationships to the environment. She also teaches and consults on topics related to public art. She has exhibited her sculpture, installation, performance, video and public projects internationally. Recently Vaughn has created commissions for Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art and for the Edith Russ Site for New Media Art in Oldenburg, Germany. Her work has been featured in Artnews, Afterimage, and Arcade Journal, among others. She studied at Massachusetts College of Art and Design and at Brown University.
