Ryan Vanderputten, P.Eng. is the Director of Transportation Planning and currently oversees the development of plans and recommended actions to best serve the city’s transportation needs. As a leader, he is passionate about delivering transportation systems that are customer focused, aligned with smart growth principles and supportive of all modes of travel.
Having worked at The City since 2002, he brings expertise in management and governance to a variety of roles across Transportation. As the Manager of Transportation Development Services, he provided leadership to a multi-disciplinary group who reviewed development applications for subdivisions, land use and development permits. During his tenure with Corporate Growth Management, he oversaw the development of a new Infrastructure Funding Strategy and created policy direction around growth management in Calgary.
Ryan completed his Master’s in Transportation Engineering from the University of Calgary and has a Master’s certificate in Municipal Leadership from York University. As a licensed Professional Engineer and a Fellow with the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), he is committed to providing safe, reliable and efficient transportation options to the public.
In his spare time, Ryan enjoys spending time with his wife and two kids. He is also an avid Calgary Flames fan. When he’s not cheering on the Flames, Ryan enjoys a good game of pickleball, volunteering in various roles with the Canadian Institute of Transportation Engineers or working on Forest City Robotics, a LEGO robotics club which he founded in 2015.
