Josh Mello, AICP was the Chief Transportation Official at the City of Palo Alto, where he supervised the city’s transportation division, which includes capital project planning, bicycle and pedestrian facility design, traffic signal system modernization, operation of the citywide shuttle system, parking management, traffic signs and markings, and the safe routes to school program. Prior to that, he was a Senior Associate at the Sacramento office of Alta Planning + Design. He has over 12 years of public and private sector experience focused on bettering the urban environment by building comfortable, safe and effective multi-modal transportation networks. His expertise includes complete streets, innovative bicycle infrastructure, pedestrian safety, transit-oriented development, transportation planning, funding, engineering and construction, and urban traffic calming. Before Alta, he served as Assistant Director of Planning and Transportation for the City of Atlanta. During his tenure there, he led the development of the CycleAtlanta: Phase 1.0 Study and subsequent implementation of more than 26 high-priority projects. Josh was recognized in 2013 as Professional of the Year by the Association of Bicycle and Pedestrian Professionals. Josh is nationally-recognized for the ground-breaking CycleAtlanta smartphone app, and his experiences serving on the NACTO Urban Bikeway Design Guide and Urban Street Design Guide steering committees.
