Altamonte Springs, Florida; Falls Church, Virginia; Saint Paul, Minnesota; and Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, join network of more than 100 city transportation agencies
The National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) is proud to announce that the cities of Altamonte Springs, Florida; Falls Church, Virginia; Saint Paul, Minnesota; and Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, have joined the more than 100 NACTO member cities and agencies dedicated to building safe, sustainable, and equitable transportation systems across North America.
“Joining NACTO’s network means that our members don’t have to tackle challenges alone,” said NACTO Executive Director Ryan Russo. “People working for our member agencies learn from the expertise of colleagues across the U.S. and Canada committed to people-first transportation—and each new member strengthens the network with their own experiences.”
Each of these new members is already doing the work to improve streets and safety for their residents:
- Altamonte Springs, Florida, is creating a long-term framework to create a cohesive multimodal transportation network.
- Falls Church, Virginia, recently adopted a Vision Zero and Complete Streets Strategy and updated its Bicycle Master Plan. Upcoming work includes building the city’s first roundabout, implementing streetscape projects that improve pedestrian accessibility, and building bike infrastructure. Through the Falls Church Smart City Program, a collaboration with the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, the City is using smart intersection technology to inform data-driven infrastructure investments.
- Saint Paul, Minnesota, is using a huge infusion of capital budget funds from a voter-approved one-cent increase to local sales taxes to support safety and multimodal improvements, regional trails, and separated bicycle facilities. The City is supporting the NACTO Designing Cities conference in Minneapolis this May.
- Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, is systemically adding sidewalks to neighborhoods, rapidly adding on-street bikeways, and investing in transit, recently becoming the first community outside of Madison with stops on a Metro Transit bus rapid transit route.
“Transportation safety is a top priority in ‘The Little City,’” said Amanda Stout Brain, Director of Public Works for the City of Falls Church. “Our staff wear many hats and focus every day on planning, designing, building, and maintaining our infrastructure. The City welcomes joining the NACTO community as we deliver transportation projects that support the City’s ambitious multimodal, safety, and sustainability goals.”
“Transportation and mobility are key to connecting people and businesses and strengthening our community,” said Sean Kershaw, Director of Public Works for the City of Saint Paul. “We are proud to join NACTO to learn from other transportation leaders, and support our core values as a city to create safe, reliable, and sustainable multimodal transportation opportunities for everyone.:
“As a fast-growing suburban City, Sun Prairie is investing heavily in retrofitting a community designed around cars to be more affordable, more people-centered, and to achieve Vision Zero,” said David Salmon, Sun Prairie Transportation Coordinator. “Joining NACTO is an investment in our staff and our community to keep Sun Prairie close to the best city transportation innovation and practice. We are excited to contribute to the conversation around city transportation, especially managing snowy cities and retrofitting suburban places.”
NACTO’s more than 100 member agencies are responsible for the safe movement of tens of millions of people every day. The organization provides its members with valuable technical assistance, peer-to-peer learning opportunities, and forums for sharing best practices. Through its peer networks, annual Designing Cities conference, federally recognized design- and policy-focused publications, targeted street design workshops, and virtual design charrettes, NACTO members showcase new projects, receive feedback from peers and industry experts, explore common challenges, and learn from shared experiences.
