Letter: Reauthorization is an opportunity for cities to lead the way on safe, efficient transportation

People are walking, biking, and driving through an intersection with compliant curb ramps and crosswalks.

U.S. cities and transit agencies have proven, real-world experience delivering infrastructure projects that get people where they need to go—safely. NACTO’s recent letter to U.S. DOT names specific opportunities in the upcoming surface transportation reauthorization to increase these local agencies’ impact and accelerate project delivery.

Cities own and maintain the majority of America’s roadway mileage and face increasing pressure from residents, local stores, and regional economic drivers to better meet today’s transportation needs. Yet, they receive a small share of federal transportation funds. Furthermore, that money often comes with unnecessary bureaucratic barriers and red tape.

A more balanced, streamlined system is needed.

NACTO’s letter draws on our federal policy platform and reflects the needs of our members in different states and regions across the country. A strong and collaborative relationship between the U.S. DOT and our members is essential to the success of the nation’s transportation infrastructure.

We look forward to conversations with the U.S. DOT about reauthorization and other ways the administration can help cities improve safety, support economic growth, and accelerate the delivery of infrastructure that meets America’s needs.

U.S. DOT has invited comments from all stakeholders on the upcoming reauthorization. Responses are due by September 8, 2025.
