Webinar: Spatial Analysis & Transportation Equity Planning

Apr 29, 2025 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm EST (12:00pm-1:00pm PST)

The City of Durham used a three-part spatial analysis as a foundational component of its Transportation Equity Action Plan. The spatial analysis included the creation of an equity index, a safety analysis, and a network analysis. The goals of the spatial analysis included:

  • Provide data-driven insights into the current spatial equity conditions of transportation infrastructure and systems in Durham
  • Identify Durham’s transportation investment priority communities
  • Understand where and how residents experience transportation safety and infrastructure disparities
  • Produce useful tools that can be integrated in transportation planning processes

In this webinar, participants will hear an overview of each part of the spatial analysis and explore the strengths and drawbacks of each approach. We will also discuss how the spatial analysis produced outputs that not only informed the plan’s action steps, but that can also be integrated into transportation planning processes including public engagement, project identification, and project prioritization.

Learning outcomes:

  1. Understand how spatial analysis approaches are useful for assessing transportation (in)equity on the levels of community, infrastructure, and individual experience
  2. Describe how the spatial analysis informed the larger action plan and future use cases
  3. Examine the limitations of data and need for broadening data and analysis capabilities for more targeted equity interventions

Speaker:

  • Charlie Menefee, Senior Planner at the Missoula Metropolitan Planning Organization. Charlie played a key role in developing and implementing the spatial analysis methodology for Durham’s Transportation Equity Action Plan.
