Join us for a tour of Western Avenue, which received the “Best Bicycle Lane of the Year” award from PeopleForBikes in 2015. We’ll talk about community engagement processes, and how neighbors and city officials were brought on board to support a separated bicycle facility here, using the street space necessary to make it work. We’ll compare and contrast the design with that of River Street, which has a narrower corridor, leading to a different set of possible cross-sections, including bus priority. Finally, we’ll check out the design for Carl Barron Plaza, a gateway to both corridors and a key place-making element of Central Square.
