It’s been over ten years since Boston established minimum guidelines for bicycle parking in new developments. But all bike rooms are not created equal. In 2019, we revisited our guidelines–comparing ourselves to peer cities, surveying users, visiting bike rooms, and asking our colleagues about working with developers. We found a compelling need to improve the design of indoor bike parking, in particular. Our 2020 update provides simple design guidance for safe and convenient bike parking.
Join us on a bike tour of the good, the bad, and the ugly in bike parking rooms. We’ll visit and critique bike rooms designed before and after the update. We’ll share how we developed criteria for rack styles to ensure bike parking is as convenient as car parking, and to serve cyclists of all ages, abilities, and transportation needs. Then, we’ll have a candid discussion about the questions we’re still working out.
