The San Mateo County Health System and Grand Boulevard Initiative have organized three trainings to introduce city and regional leaders and practitioners to emerging engineering guidelines that enable sustainable street designs that maximize the opportunity for safe, walkable and bikeable communities.
Across San Mateo County, the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Greenbook and related publications serve as the main source of engineering guidance for planning, designing, and operating bicycle and pedestrian facilities. However,
the National Association of City Transportation Officials’ (NACTO) Urban Street Design Guide and Urban Bikeway Design Guide, which provide specific technical guidance for design and implementation of walkable, bikeable communities, are quickly gaining traction and over 50 cities have already adopted these guidelines.
Staff level practitioners and local leaders experience barriers to implementing progressive, multi-modal design guidelines. This training seeks to lower those barriers by addressing concerns about complete street design, implementation and evaluation. These trainings will highlight that NACTO guidelines are compatible extensions of accepted standards.
Goals
Participants should walk away with a sense that:
1) There are robust resources for bicycle and pedestrian design;
2) Such designs are being implemented to create, reinvigorate, and enhance walkable, bikeable
communities around the country; and
3) That there is federal support for using those resources, which make communities that adopt them more competitive for funding.
