How can community-based organizations lead the way to re-envision streets and public spaces? The Lakeview Chamber of Commerce and SSA 27 have invested significantly in enhancing the public realm in Chicago’s West Lakeview community. From parklets and temporary street closures to pilot intersection design and re-purposing space under the elevated rail tracks, this community has been experimenting and innovating to meet the need for more people-friendly public space. This tour will visit completed as well as planned project sites. Learn how the City of Chicago is enabling locally-led projects, how big impact can be achieved with a small budget, and how cities can partner with local organizations to test interim designs before undertaking significant capital projects.
