Cities are shifting priorities to accommodate growing numbers of cyclists, pedestrians, and transit users on urban arterial, posing questions on how best to allocate limited right-of-way for different modes. This session will present innovative approaches from the Alameda County Multimodal Arterial Plan, provide thinking on how next-generation vehicles and demographic trends may affect design consideration, and will culminate in an interactive design challenge. For the challenge, attendees will form groups to experiment with street cross-section designs fro a San Francisco arterial case study. Selected designs will then be evaluated using performance-based and comfort-base metrics.
