NACTO Urges All Levels of Government to take Action that Strengthen Gains from Landmark Climate Bill

Aug 16, 2022

Corinne Kisner, Executive Director of the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO), made the following statement in response to Biden’s signage of the Inflation Reduction Act into law:

NACTO congratulates the Biden Administration and Congressional leadership for passing and signing into law the Inflation Reduction Act–a landmark achievement that will dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the United States.

This bill promises to invest in renewable energy, electrify transportation, and cut U.S. emissions by up to 40 percent by 2030–including critical steps for reducing the transportation sector emissions that account for over a third of the nation’s total. To unlock the bill’s full potential, state and local governments will need to complement this legislation with bold action on climate at the state and local level.

NACTO urgently calls on legislators and decision-makers at all levels of government to enact complementary policies that will strengthen the gains made from this milestone bill–from expanding transit service and frequency, to setting strict greenhouse gas reduction goals, to dedicating funding and resources from the landmark infrastructure bill passed last year towards low-carbon and active transportation projects.

Swift action to complement the climate measures in the Inflation Reduction Act can accelerate the country’s fight against climate change, while building a more resilient and accessible transportation system that brings America’s opportunities to everyone
