The National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) announced today that the City of Vancouver has joined NACTO, making Vancouver the second Canadian city to join this collaborative peer network committed to advancing urban transportation and city street design.
“Vancouver’s ambitious targets for green transportation are closely aligned with NACTO’s mandate to provide 21st century transportation infrastructure,” said Jerry Dobrovolny, Director of Transportation for the City of Vancouver. “As an international member, Vancouver has many successes and learnings to contribute and will benefit from the exchange of innovative solutions so we all collectively achieve our transportation goals and address emerging challenges.”
“Vancouver is a strong addition to the NACTO network,” commented Ed Reiskin, NACTO President and Director of Transportation for the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency. “The city’s vision for an inclusive, healthy, and prosperous future with safe, active transportation options is closely aligned with NACTO’s principles, and we’re eager to exchange best practices across the border.”
The City of Vancouver’s Transportation 2040 Plan sets a vision to guide public investments through policy development and specific actions for all transportation modes. One of the Plan’s targets is to have at least two-thirds of all trips made by foot, bike or transit by 2040. Another target is to move toward zero traffic-related fatalities.
Collaboration with NACTO will help inform Vancouver in its efforts to upgrade and expand the existing active transportation network to a new standard that is safe, convenient and comfortable for people of all ages and abilities. This shared expertise will also assist with street design along a future rapid transit line on the Broadway corridor, which is Vancouver’s number one transportation priority to achieve mode share and safety targets.
