Letter: City-informed research needed for safe deployment of automated vehicles

A group of people stand on the curb, waiting to enter an autonomous vehicle.

The U.S. Department of Transportation recently asked for input on what research activities are needed to support the nationwide deployment of automated vehicles (AVs). NACTO and our member agencies understand the potential benefits of autonomous vehicles, particularly their ability to serve people who face barriers with existing transportation options—such as individuals with visual disabilities or trans travelers. But, without appropriate policy and regulation based on thorough research, these technologies risk making our cities more congested and less accessible.

Our members’ real-world experience shows that realizing positive outcomes requires collaborative relationships between private interests and governments. This is also the foundation of public trust.

The priorities shared in NACTO’s letter to U.S. DOT include specifics on data standards, infrastructure readiness, and system-wide impacts. We also highlight key challenges and opportunities related to planning, fairness, transparency, and public trust—factors that are essential to ensuring that AV technologies serve the public interest.

We look forward to conversations with the U.S. DOT on research that provides the foundation for a thriving autonomous vehicle industry that guarantees safety and has enduring success in a competitive global market.
