Safe System/Vision Zero Peer Network: August Coffee Chat

Aug 6, 2025 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm AKT (noon - 1 p.m. PT)

Join your peers in NACTO’s Safe System / Vision Zero peer network for an informal discussion on speed management for arterial (4+ lane) roads. At our June 24 gathering, we discussed the need to decide if a street is intended for walking, biking, and face-to-face interactions or if it is intended to move vehicles at higher speeds. Dr. Patricia Tice shared research that explains why the greatest risks occur on streets that try to do both.

At this coffee chat, we’d like to reflect on what this means for us as city transportation officials and share strategies that we can use, in the short term and in the long term, to tame arterial roads or convert them into streets.

Please come and bring your thoughts, ideas, and questions while getting to know your peers. Your peer network co-chairs, Clay Veka of Portland, OR, and Charlotte Fleetwood of Boston, will be hosting.

This event is only open to staff at NACTO member agencies. Member agency staff can find information on how to join the meeting on our member forum, here.
