City Voices: Curbing Traffic, The Human Case for Fewer Cars in our Lives

Mar 5, 2025 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm EST (11:00 am - 12:00 pm PST)

The City Voices: NACTO Coffee Chat series provides a casual virtual space for NACTO members to share and learn from peers across the country. Have your hot beverage or lunch ready—depending on your time zone—and join this generative space for dynamic conversation led by NACTO staff and members.

Join this engaging discussion about Melissa and Chris Bruntlett’s book Curbing Traffic, The Human Case for Fewer Cars in Our Lives where they chronicle their experience living in the Netherlands and the benefits of treating cars as visitors rather than owners of the road. They weave personal stories with research and interviews with experts and Delft locals to help readers share the experience of living in a city designed for people.

Melissa and Chris will share a presentation to help NACTO members better understand and communicate the human impacts of low-car cities: lower anxiety and stress, increased independence, social autonomy, inclusion, and improved mental and physical well-being. The book is organized around the benefits of thoughtfully curbing traffic, resulting in a city that is child-friendly, connected, trusting, feminist, quiet, therapeutic, accessible, prosperous, resilient, and age-friendly.

Speakers:

  • Melissa Bruntlett, Founder, Modacity Creative
  • Chris Bruntlett, International Relations Manager, Dutch Cycling Embassy
