Cities for Cycling Peer Network: Managing Sidewalk-Bikeway Interactions with Detectable Edges

Jun 26, 2026 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm ET (noon-1 pm PT)

As municipalities adopt designs that move vulnerable users away from motor travel lanes by bringing bike facilities up to sidewalk level, distinguishing among users poses unique challenges. The type of detectable surface for a sidewalk-level bikeway is not set by any federal agency at this point. Research indicates that raised trapezoidal delineators are preferred. Cities are navigating how to best serve blind and low-vision pedestrians.

In this session, we will discuss lessons learned, success stories, and opportunities to distinguish between facilities with examples from three cities on the leading edge of implementing detectable surfaces: San Francisco, CA; Minneapolis, MN; and Ann Arbor, MI.

This event is only open to staff at NACTO member agencies. Member agency staff can access registration details on our community forum.
