NACTO cities and transit agencies aspire to stronger, safer transportation systems and communities. To get there, they need infrastructure policies and transportation projects that connect people to opportunity, disrupt historical harm, and address urgent safety needs.
NACTO’s Policy Platform outlines our policy positions on a variety of transportation issues and provides a framework for changing federal, state, and local transportation policies to reflect the needs of our members–in service of safe, sustainable, and accessible transportation systems.
Transportation infrastructure and policy should serve the public good. To do this, and the public sector should ensure the wise use of public funds, balancing investments in roadways, bridges, and transit with spending to reimagine public space and mitigation measures to avoid displacement.
NACTO’s core policy principles and priorities are:
- Eliminate traffic fatalities and injuries by making safety transportation’s top priority.
- End the racist legacy of transportation policy and planning and build an equitable, accessible transportation system.
- Prioritize and expand transit to meet the nation’s current and future mobility and access needs.
- Lead the transition to a low-carbon transportation system.
- Modernize transportation funding.
- Enable local control over project selection and development.
- Research and leverage emerging technologies to advance public policy priorities.
