Transportation is the largest source of carbon emissions in the U.S.–and one of the largest sources of pollutants in urban areas. Cities are proactively reducing the burden of emissions on residents by providing safe, convenient, and reliable alternatives to private vehicle trips.
As weather patterns change, cities are also responding to increased flooding. They are using transportation projects to capture and process stormwater before it overwhelms sewer systems or floods homes and businesses.
NACTO champions this critical work with member cities through opportunities for peer connection and learning. Cities across North America build on these lessons by adopting NACTO’s design and policy guidance to make walking, biking, and taking transit easier in urban areas.
Through policy development, program management, and on-the-ground projects, cities across North America are demonstrating the critical role local governments play in addressing climate change.
What We’re Working On
NACTO Design Guidance
NACTO’s evidence-based design guides are used by cities across North America to build safe, multimodal urban streets.
Transit on City Streets
Delivering better transit requires cities and transit agencies to work hand-in-hand. NACTO supports these partnerships.
American Cities Climate Challenge
The Bloomberg American Cities Climate Challenge was an initiative to reduce emissions in 25 of America’s largest cities.
Policy Guide
Move! That! Bus!
The most powerful tool leaders have to address catastrophic climate change is the humble city bus.
