NACTO works with federal lawmakers and the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) to represent our members and ensure transportation is safe, equitable, and sustainable. This includes monitoring the federal legislative and regulatory environment, working with U.S. DOT to improve transportation design practices, and advancing policy that helps cities create transportation systems that are safe, sustainable, and accessible.
NACTO’s Policy Platform informs our federal policy work. Priorities include:
- Pushing for changes to federal design standards for streets and vehicles
- Leading campaigns to increase funding opportunities for cities
- Re-aligning federal transportation funding from highway expansion to safety, sustainability, and equity projects
- Championing autonomous vehicle testing standards to keep city streets safe
NACTO’s policy wins include:
- Key reforms to the MUTCD–the federal document that dictates what nearly every American street looks like
- New programs in the infrastructure bill–including Safe Streets and Roads for All and Reconnecting Communities–that bring infrastructure dollars to the local projects that have the most impact
- Encouraging better vehicle design and direct vision standards for vehicles
- Advocating for greenhouse gas emissions to be tracked and reduced
