Michigan Avenue is a major surface route that runs through downtown Detroit. In 2010, the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) received American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding to resurface a portion of the roadway. At public meetings held before construction, the community and the Greater Corktown Development Corporation of Detroit voiced a strong desire to include bike lanes in the new footprint for Michigan Ave. Responding to these recommendations, MDOT reconfigured the roadway from three 11’ lanes in each direction to two 12’ lanes with a center turning lane, a 5’ bike lane, and an 10’ parking lane. ”Bike Lane Ahead” signage advising motorists to watch for bicyclists was put in place on cross streets intersecting with the bike lane.
